Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews had a run-in with Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Elvis Merzlikins and it led to a truly hilarious moment.

Auston Matthews may have scored a goal on Merzlikins last night, however, the Blue Jackets goaltender had the last laugh as his team won by a score of 5-1.

Having said that, the Leafs captain and the Blue Jackets netminder had another run-in on Wednesday that went viral all throughout social media.

Auston Matthews speaks on Elvis Merzlikins situation

By now, you have probably seen the clip. After losing his stick, Merzlikins stole Matthews' twig right out of his hands.

Subsequently, Matthews sought to take recent and decided to pick up the goaltender's stick and play with it for a few seconds.

Unfortunately for both parties, this is against the rules and they were both hit with offsetting penalties.

After the game, Auston Matthews made a hilarious admission about the situation. Simply put, he had no idea that what he did was against the rules. Clearly, he needs to do some reading.

«I gotta read the rule book, I guess.»

Regardless of the antics that happened on the ice last night, the Maple Leafs lost and they did so in embarrassing fashion.

That makes back-to-back losses against the Columbus Blue Jackets this season which does not bode well for the playoffs.

In fact, the Blue Jackets are in a wild-card spot and could very well draw the Leafs in the postseason.

Hopefully, Matthews can keep up his current pace and prove that the team can be successful come playoff time.
