Team USA captain Auston Matthews missed multiple chances in overtime of the 4 Nations Face-Off and he also played a horrible defense on Canada's winner.
Auston Matthews is one of the best hockey players in the entire world, however, he did not have a great overtime against Team Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off.
He was robbed twice by Jordan Binnington, and he also played terrible defense on the game-winner by Connor McDavid. He drifted towards Toronto Maple Leafs teammate Mitch Marner, and left McDavid wide open in the slot.
It was an incredible goal by McDavid, and for a lot of American fans, it was just a truly heartbreaking occurrence.
Auston Matthews blamed for 4 Nations Face-Off loss
Following the game, Matthews was lit up on social media, as numerous fans rushed to blame him for the loss.
Many felt like his missed opportunities and bad defense are exactly why Canada is coming away from this tournament with a win.
Overall, it is a pretty harsh assessment, although you cannot blame fans for feeling that way.
One does have to acknowledge that Matthews had two assists in the game, and that is something to be excited about.
He was not terrible, he just had a bad moment at the most important time in the entire game.
It's definitely a difficult situation and you can't help but acknowledge that Matthews is going to have to be better in these moments, going forward.
If you are a Maple Leafs fan, you can't help but feel at least just a little bit of PTSD amidst all of this.
