For years, general managers around the league have been told that they are not allowed to sign or negotiate contracts with players prior to the July 1st Free Agency opening.
However, every single year without fail, players and teams announce their contracts as soon as Free Agency opens.
Of course, this makes it very obvious that contracts are being negotiated ahead of time, which is against the league's rules.
As we reported a few weeks ago, Tyler Bertuzzi's contract was being investigated for this very reason.
According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Bill Daly has sent a memo to teams outlining what kind of punishments they can expect for tampering.
As you can see, the league is not messing around with this stuff. Some players could lose their careers, while teams could lose players, draft picks, and a whole lot of money.
One has to wonder whether or not the teams are actually going to take this threat seriously.
However, it is good to see that the NHL wants to crack down on this as it is messing with the integrity of the league.
A lot of players and general managers are going to have to change the way they approach Free Agency, which may not be popular.
