Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares is up for a new contract and his play has been so good that there are now talks of his salary exceeding expectations.

With 21 goals and 45 points in 47 games this season, there is no doubt that John Tavares is outperforming his age right now.

Consequently, the price on Tavares' next deal is about to go up and that is especially true when you factor in the increases to the salary cap.

In three seasons from now, the cap is expected to go up from $88 milion to $113.5 million.

Having said that, Toronto Star reporter Kevin McGran is claiming that the Maple Leafs may be stuck in a situation where they have to overpay Tavares.

Original reports from the Fall were claiming that Tavares would only be making $5 million per year on his next deal.

However, as McGran explains, it is more likely than not that Tavares would demand upwards of $8 million, which is pretty lofty.

Ditto Tavares. It's widely assumed the former captain will resign for less than the $11-million average he got as a free agent in the summer of 2018. But with that extra money in the system it may not drop that far --- an $8-million average is not that bad a bet.

The Leafs will also have to pay guys like Mitch Marner and Matthew Knies, which will make the summer that much more difficult.

General Manager Brad Treliving is going to have his hands full and some tears may get shed throughout this ordeal.

One can only hope that Marner, Tavares, and Knies all get to stick around for another season.
