NHL insider Darren Dreger spoke about the availability of St. Louis Blues captain Brayden Schenn and the price the Toronto Maple Leafs would need to pay for him.

Brayden Schenn is reportedly on the trading block as the deadline approaches and teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs are currently showing interest.

Can the Toronto Maple Leafs afford Brayden Schenn

Unfortunately, insiders like Darren Dreger are throwing an extra helping of cold water on the Leafs' chances.

As the insider explained, the Maple Leafs simply do not have enough assets to make this kind of deal happen.

For now, the Blues are looking for a top prospect, an AHL player, and a top draft pick as well.

I won't throw out names from Toronto's standpoint because I don't think they have the assets to approach that negotiation, but I would look at a top young prospect, maybe another top prospect from the AHL and a top draft pick.

If I'm [GM Doug] Armstrong and you want to convince me to move my captain with a pretty good deal, you have to make it worth my while and that's essentially what it might take.

Considering the fact that Schenn has 11 goals and 32 points this season, his production simply isn't worth that kind of return.

Meanwhile, there are others centers that the Maple Leafs could look at right now who would make a whole lot more sense.

Scott Laughton and Yanni Gourde are two guys who would be a lot cheaper for the Maple Leafs to trade for.

General Manager Brad Treliving has to be smart here and the fans are counting on him to do a good job at the deadline.

The Leafs are a top team in the Eastern Conference and the right trade could give this team some hope in a potential cup run.
