Seth Jones and the Chicago Blackhawks have been on the outs for a few months now and everyone is pretty well convinced that the defenseman will be traded at the deadline.
However, the D-man currently makes $9.5 million per year, which certainly makes his contract incredibly hard to swallow for most teams.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are a team that has reportedly been interested in Jones, especially in light of a recent injury to Chris Tanev.
Last night, the Blackhawks lost pretty badly and with Jones fuming after the game, he ripped his team to the media, and it all but ensured that he will be traded soon.
With that being said, now could be the perfect time for the Maple Leafs and general manager Brad Treliving to swoop in with an offer that could get the Blackhawks intrigued.
Jones' comments have severely damaged Chicago's leverage here. Why? Well, teams are now aware that the defenseman is unhappy, which makes the Blackhawks desperate to get rid of him.
Moreover, his cap hit will also lead to lowball offers and perhaps even some salary retention. This all plays into the Maple Leafs' favor because they could get him at an asset discount and a fiscal discount.
While acquiring Jones might be a pipe dream for some, it might be the kind of move that separates the Leafs from the pack in the Eastern Conference.
With the team now first in the Atlantic Division, they must make the moves necessary to keep the momentum going.
