The Toronto Maple Leafs are taking on the Buffalo Sabres tonight and their choices for starting goaltender are Joseph Woll and their latest call-up, Matt Murray.

Murray had been playing in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies since last season, and some wondered if he would ever get a chance to play in the NHL again.

Earlier today, the goaltender was called up to the main club, while Dennis Hildeby was sent back down to get some more reps in the minors.

Matt Murray gets the call for the Toronto Maple Leafs

Tonight, the Maple Leafs are playing against the Buffalo Sabres in the first game of a back-to-back.

On Saturday, the Leafs play against the New York Islanders, which means both of these upcoming games are very winnable.

As for Friday night against the Sabres, the Maple Leafs have confirmed that they will actually be going with Matt Murray.

According to Luke Fox of Sportsnet, Craig Berube is very confident in this decision.

«He still has a lot of fire inside.»

This is definitely going to be a very interesting situation going forward, as Murray has not played an NHL game since April of 2023.

However, he does have a wealth of experience in the National Hockey League, and he does deserve another crack at it, especially in the backup capacity.

If he plays poorly, then the Maple Leafs can just go back to Hildeby, who does have a couple of wins already this season.

Having said that, the Leafs are playing a pretty terrible Sabres team, which means a win is absolutely expected.
