Jay Rosehill played on the Toronto Maple Leafs during a time when Kyle Dubas was getting his feet wet in the hockey world and bringing analytics to the franchise's front office.
When the current Pittsburgh Penguins general manager took over in Toronto, the team took a new approach to roster construction and unfortunately, it just never worked in the playoffs.
During the latest episode of Leafs Morning Take, Jay Rosehill offered his hypothesis for why this approach never actually panned out in Toronto.
As he explains, Dubas tried to look at hockey like the movie Moneyball, which was way more applicable to a sport like baseball.
While this worked for a little bit, Rosehill believes the general manager stopped actually watching the games and instead just crunched a bunch of numbers that were not indicative of the eye test.
This subsequently led to teams that lacked grit and could just not get things done in the postseason.
Now, the Maple Leafs have Brad Treliving who is much more traditional when putting rosters together and this year's version of the Maple Leafs certainly proves that.
Meanwhile, Kyle Dubas has been catching a ton of heat with the Penguins as the team has been awful and Sidney Crosby's final years are being wasted.
If you are a Maple Leafs fan, you are probably very happy with the fact that the team decided to move on from the Dubas era, once and for all.
However, fans of the franchise still want a Stanley Cup and until they get that, Treliving will continue to have to work hard to ensure this team's success.
