Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has his work cut out for him at the NHL trade deadline and there is no doubt that fans are excited for a move.

Overall, Treliving has primarily been focused on acquiring a third-line center who can inject some offense into the bottom-six as the playoffs approach.

However, there have also been rumors and rumblings involving players like Mikko Rantanen, who isn't very keen on the idea of re-signing with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Well, as Elliotte Friedman suggests on 32 Thoughts, the Maple Leafs have actually employed a new strategy at the deadline.

Will the Toronto Maple Leafs trade for Mikko Rantanen?

While a third-line center is still very much the goal right now, the Maple Leafs also want to seek out a defenseman due to the injury to Chris Tanev. Moreover, they just want some insurance.

Furthermore, Friedman suggests the Leafs would be willing to take a swing at a guy like Rantanen, although it is unclear if he will be available.

"I wonder if they're thinking about [defensemen]. Not only for performance reasons, but look, Tanev's hurt, he's going to be fine, but he just got hurt. Ekman-Larsson played Sunday, he got hurt the other night against the Rangers -- I just wonder if they want insurance... They're going to add a forward, most likely a centre, and like I said... it's Treliving's M.O., if there's any Rantanen out there, even if it's just a rental, he looks at it."

At this stage, the fans just want to see something get done and they want to see it get done fast.

Brad Treliving has yet to make a big move as the general manager of the Maple Leafs, and the click is ticking, especially with the playoffs happening very soon.

Of course, the Maple Leafs are already a very good team that is currently first place in the Atlantic Division standings.

Furthermore, they are on a five-game winning streak and can easily make that six against a team like the San Jose Sharks.
