William Nylander and the Maple Leafs were not on the best of terms back in 2018 and it led to a lot of speculation that the forward could be traded.
Well, according to reporter Jeff Marek, it appears as though those trade talks almost manifested into an all-out blockbuster.
As Marek explained on his podcast, Nylander was almost dealt to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for defenseman Alex Pietrangelo.
It's probably a good thing the Blues didn't make this trade as just a year later, they would win the Stanley Cup with Pietrangelo as a centerpiece of that team.
Now, Pietrangelo is with the Las Vegas Golden Knights where he has been a very good player for that team.
As for William Nylander, he is having one of the best seasons of his career so far with 33 goals. He even had a hat trick against the Calgary Flames a few nights ago.
Overall, it is hard to imagine these players swapping like this. Although it is kind of ironic that this trade would have paired Nylander with Craig Berube a couple of years early.
Whatever the case may be, Nylander is not on the trade block anymore and neither is Pietrangelo.
With the trade deadline approaching, we can only imagine what the Maple Leafs might have in store.
