John Tavares' reported salary expectations are way too much for the Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares is up for a new contract and it appears as though his salary expectations are a bit too rich given his age and status.
Tavares lost the captaincy this past season, however, it has only motivated him further as he currently has 29 points in the first 31 games of the season, and fans are loving how he looks on the ice.

It seems like every single week, there is a new update on the former captain and what kind of salary he is expected to get.
There were some analysts claiming that Tavares would only make around $3.5 million per year on his next deal.
However, due to John Tavares' point production, it seems pretty clear that he is going to make a whole lot more than that.
In fact, according to David Pagnotta, there is a real chance that the forward makes anywhere from $6 to $7.5 million on his next deal.
Considering the fact that the Maple Leafs also have to sign a guy like Mitch Marner, it seems pretty clear that this deal is way too rich for the Leafs.
At the end of the day, Tavares is not a player that the Leafs are in a position to overpay.
He will be 35 soon and that means father time could creep up on him at any moment. Sure, the Leafs could counter this with a short-term deal, but they still need to keep their options open.
Being right up against the cap isn't always beneficial, and it would certainly take away Brad Treliving's ability to make big trades that can aid with the team's depth.
