Shockingly, the Leafs have a record of 36-19-2 whenever Matthews is not in the lineup. This is pretty surprising stuff and one can only imagine how Matthews must feel knowing that. It has led to some questions, albeit questions that aren't really leading to important answers.
It's not like getting rid of Matthews is actually the solution here. Well, during an appearance on "Leafs Morning Take" with Jay Rosehill and Nick Alberga, former Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke joked about just that. As you can hear below, Burke laughed that the best way to make the Leafs play well all the time would be to remove Matthews from the equation.
Burke then went on to give a real explanation for this bizarre phenomenon. He said that was is essentially happening here, is that the Leafs just rise to the occasion because they know that their captain is out of the lineup.
It is an interesting analysis and one that may actually scare a certain subset of Leafs fans. After all, this isn't exactly the kind of thing that you want to hear. You want the team to play well regardless of what the lineup looks like. Having said that, the Leafs will certainly be excited to get Matthews back soon.
