Matt Murray was called up to the Maple Leafs for a short stint in which he played two games, winning one and losing one.
In the game he lost, Murray was subpar and it ultimately led to him being demoted to the Toronto Marlies, while Dennis Hildeby made his way back to the NHL.
Since going back down to the AHL, Murray has been nothing short of sensational and he is making quite the case for himself.
In fact, the goalie has earned two straight shutouts. A few days ago, we reported on the first of these shutouts and how the Leafs may need to seriously consider calling him up.
Tonight, Murray did it again, and now, it is crystal clear that the best course of action would be swapping the two-time Stanley Cup champion for Hildeby.
Hildeby has not been particularly good with the Leafs in his five stars as his goals-against average is above three and his save percentage is below .900.
Additionally, the Leafs have been hesitant to put him in the net, which has forced Joseph Woll into a harsher workload.
The Hildebeast is still young and could use extra time to develop in the AHL. Meanwhile, Murray would either give you similar numbers or better ones.
At this stage, the Leafs have nothing to lose, especially since Anthony Stolarz will be returning to the lineup in a few weeks.
If Murray isn't given an opportunity, then perhaps he will be used as trade bait for a team that could use an extra goalie.
