Just a few weeks ago, the Toronto Maple Leafs brought Alex Nylander up to the big leagues and even signed him to a one-year deal in a move that reunited him with his brother William.
However, since entering the Maple Leafs lineup, he has only played five games, and he has registered a total of zero points in these matches.
So far, the main critique of Nylander has been that he looks pretty slow out there. He cannot maintain pace and it drags his line down.
With players returning from injury, there has been talk about what should happen next to Nylander.
Unfortunately, the answer to that question is not a positive one for the guy, as today, it was reported by Elliotte Friedman that the Leafs put Alex Nylander on waivers.
It was also revealed that the team put defenseman Dakota Mermis on waivers, which makes sense given the fact that he has not seen action this season.
Mermis suffered an injury in training camp and was on the road to recovery this entire time.
If Nylander and Mermis end up clearing waivers, they will be sent down to the Toronto Marlies, where they will be much better served at this stage.
For Nylander, this is definitely a disappointing fate. Fans wanted to see him get some ice time with his brother, but that won't be happening anytime soon.
Hopefully, Nylander can find his speed and maybe even get another chance with the big club.
Until then, the Marlies will be happy to have some extra talent as they continue to boast an impressive roster.
