Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner was asked about not waving his no-trade cause and it led to a truly terrible answer from the veteran star.

Yesterday, we reported that the Toronto Maple Leafs approached Mitch Marner about waving his no-trade clause in a potential Mikko Rantanen deal.

However, the forward refused and in the end, the team missed the boat on Rantanen.

Now, the Leafs are looking to sign Marner to a contract extension, otherwise, they will be left holding the bag while every other team in the league gets exponentially better.

Mitch Marner skirts question about Toronto Maple Leafs future

Last night, the Maple Leafs lost 7-4 to the Colorado Avalanche and while Marner had two goals, all the media could talk about was his refusal to waive his no-trade clause.

When asked about it, the forward noted that he is simply focused on the playing hockey in Toronto and that this is where he wants to be.

«I'm here to play hockey with this team. That's what I can tell you. I want to be here, and I want to play with this team."

While this may sound great, it all falls apart as Mitch Marner refuses to talk about his upcoming contract extension and the ongoing negotiations.

In fact, one could look at these comments and make the assumption that the forward is playing dirty tricks on the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise.

"Like I told you guys at the start of the year, I'm not going to get into this. I'm here to play hockey and will let my agent and the team handle that.

I'm not going to discuss any contract stuff. I've been very grateful and have loved my time as a Leaf. That's what I'll leave with you guys. We've got 20 games left, and they won't be easy.»

Marner wants $14 million per year which is rich given the fact Rantanen, a proven winner, got $12 million.

Now, the Leafs risk being outbid by a bottom feeder, all while losing the forward for absolutely nothing. If that happens, the fact Marner could have waived his no-trade clause but didn't will end up living on as one of the worst moments in the history of the franchise.
