The Toronto Maple Leafs are currently having some problems with Mitch Marner and his contract situation which may not get resolved before July 1st.
Overall, this has led to speculation that Marner will leave in free agency and if he does, then the team will have to find some sort of replacement.
According to Paul Bissonnette of the NHL on TNT panel, the Toronto Maple Leafs are actually taking a look Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett.
At 20 goals and 41 points this season, Bennett cannot replace Mitch Marner's production. However, what he can do is add a ton of grit and Stanley Cup experience into the team.
As it stands, the Panthers forward makes over just $4 million per season and while his next deal will be more than that, losing Marner would definitely give the Leafs a ton of cap space to work with.
Bennett is absolutely one of those guys you would love to have on your team as evidenced by his work with Team Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off.
He scored a goal in the gold medal game during the tournament and he also took part in a fight in the first game against the United States.
At the end of the day, the Toronto Maple Leafs still need to figure out what to do with Marner. For all intents and purposes, he is the priority at this moment.
Nevertheless, you always need a contingency plan and Bennett would be the perfect guy to introduce to this Maple Leafs team.
He would surely become an immediate favorite of head coach Craig Berube.
