John Tavares and Mitch Marner are two players who need to have their contracts renegotiated with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Of course, these are two players that the Toronto Maple Leafs and their fans would love to retain and keep around for a very long time.

However, that is a lot easier said that done. Marner demands a whole lot of money and he will very likely want something long-term that pays him close to whatever William Nylander and Auston Matthews is making. Meanwhile, Tavares is getting older, which means his contract won't be as cumbersome.

This is something that was parroted by David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period.

In a recent podcast episode, he noted that the only way either player signs during the season is if it is on a team-friendly deal.

For now, it seems like only Tavares would be willing to give the Leafs something of that sort.

"If they're willing to take team-friendly deals, then I think the chances would be decent. I think Tavares would be more inclined to go that direction than Marner."

Marner is too young to give a team friendly deal at this stage. Meanwhile, Tavares is certainly more inclined to given the fact that he came to Toronto knowing he wanted to be the hometown kid.

The Core Four have not won a Cup together, but there is no doubt that if they do, they would forever be beloved by the city and its fans.
