When Mikko Rantanen was traded from the Colorado Avalanche to the Carolina Hurricanes, it sent shockwaves throughout the NHL.
The Chicago Blackhawks were part of the deal and they ended up retaining some of Rantanen's deal as a way to help out the Avalanche.
With Rantanen being wishy-washy on signing with the Hurricanes in free agency, there have been rumors about the Avalanche re-acquiring Rantanen through a trade at the deadline.
Overall, this would be damn near unprecedented and one has to wonder whether or not there is any viability to something like this.
Well, the NHL has answered that question as according to Elliotte Friedman, there is a rule in place that states how teams cannot re-acquire a player that they already have salary retention on.
Re-acquiring Rantanen at a discounted price would simply be unfair, and it is good that the NHL has safeguards to make sure scenarios like this don't play out.
However, what is interesting is how the Toronto Maple Leafs fit into all of this. They are a team that is in the midst of trying to re-sign Mitch Marner, a player of similar value and skillset as Rantanen.
If the Leafs do not feel like Marner is serious about taking their offers, they may just swing for the fences and do a Marner for Rantanen one-for-one deal like Paul Bissonnette proposed months ago.
Of course, this is a very unlikely scenario at this stage of the game. Having said that, it is easy to get wrapped up in the potential moves as the trade deadline approaches on March 7th.
No matter what, things are definitely about to get very interesting.
