NHL insider Darren Dreger recently spoke about the Toronto Maple Leafs and their ongoing contract talks with forward Mitch Marner, who is seeking a huge deal.

Mitch Marner is having a career season so far as he has 71 points in 56 games, putting him on pace for his first-ever 100-point season.

However, with this success comes the desire to make more money and now that he is in a contract negotiation, and the Maple Leafs are feeling the heat.

How much will Mitch Marner make on his next Toronto Maple Leafs contract?

According to numerous sources, Marner is seeking a deal with an AAV of about $14 million, however, that would mean he'd be making more than Auston Matthews.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and General Manager Brad Treliving are not thrilled about that prospect and it has significantly impacted negotiations. Now, Marner is at risk of exploring the free agent market, which spells trouble for Toronto.

According to Darren Dreger, things are reaching a dire state, and it is up to Treliving to put a stop to it.

Look, Brad Treliving as GM he doesn't have to play by the rules of Darren Ferris, the agent.

He can go directly to Mitch, he can go to Ferris and say 'I need an answer. We need to get into negotiations. I've been very patient in waiting, and we didn't want to disrupt Marner, we want his focus to be on playing.'

I don't believe you'll have certainty by the 7th of March [trade deadline day], but the GM can put pressure on the player and GM.

Overall, the Toronto Maple Leafs are very much eager to keep Mitch Marner on their team moving forward.

However, they also must acknowledge that they cannot overpay given his lack of playoff success over the years.

If the Maple Leafs make a deep run, perhaps the increased salary cap will be enough to change their minds into giving Marner a monumental deal.

Until then, it appears as though both sides are simply going to be taking their time until either party gets what they truly want.

Whether or not that means Marner leaving Toronto, remains to be seen.
