Toronto Maple Leafs Linked to 6'6" Team Canada Defenseman at the Trade Deadline
The Toronto Maple Leafs are a team that is looking to buy at the trade deadline and there is a large Team Canada defenseman who could be a prime candidate.
Colton Parayko was at the 4 Nations Face-Off for Team Canada where he was able to win the championship alongside his St. Louis Blues teammate Jordan Binnington.
With the Blues shaping up as sellers at the deadline, it is becoming crystal clear that the 6'6" defenseman could be a great trade option for the Leafs moving forward.
In a new article from Justin Bourne, it was revealed that Parayko is actually the top player of interest right now.
Why? Well, the Maple Leafs blue line has very little depth and they need to go out and make a move prior to the playoffs.
🔹Top Player of Interest: Colton Parayko.
🔹Top Player in Trouble: Max Domi.
🔹Top Team to Pilfer: Boston Bruins.
🔹Top Concern: Fans Being Sold «Internal Fixes» to Roster Holes. The Leafs have a ton of other needs at the trade deadline, including a center, and General Manager Brad Treliving understands this.
«One medium-to-big-name player comes in, like Brock Nelson, Yanni Gourde, or Scott Laughton, while they also bring in a depth D-man to shore up the back-end.
In this scenario (player-dependent), the team would be better-probably about as much better as the teams around them. That leaves them with a fighting chance, rather than an advantage. And with that, I suppose they could then start talking about how Calle Jarnkrok is an upgrade, etc.
As much as I'd love for them to land Parayko, or Dylan Cozens, or do something crazy like find a way to get Mikko Rantanen with crazy retention, it's hard to see it happening. The salary cap is going up, but things are still tight, and their asset list is pretty short. (I can't shake the «But, boy, Vegas always seems to find a way» voice in the back of my head.)
The mandate for the front office is clear, thanks to the soft division I mentioned off the top. They're not surrounded by Olympic-level sprinters for once, so they need to get the best player or two they can-because they have a legitimate chance to outrun this somewhat flawed group around them.» If you are the Toronto Maple Leafs, you have to feel some urgency with getting another move in right now.
The current roster is first in the Atlantic which is great, but this is not enough to win a Stanley Cup, which should be the goal.
No matter what, things are about to get real interesting as we get closer to March 7th.
