Ottawa Senators pest Nick Cousins injured himself as he went after Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Jacob Quillan with a disgusting knee-on-knee hit.

Jacob Quillan is playing in his first NHL game tonight and he has a ton of family at the game to support him.

The forward is from the Ottawa area, and his unlikely ascent to the NHL has certainly drawn attention. Unfortunately, his first game was almost over before it started.

In the clip below, Cousins could be seen skating towards Quillan while on the backcheck.

Instead of going for a clean hit, Cousins stuck out his leg to try and clip the young rookie. However, Cousins got the worst of it during a knee-on-knee collision.

While Quillan did go down in some pain, it was the Ottawa Senators star who was forced to go to the bench and eventually go to the locker room.

Meanwhile, Quillan was very clearly shaken up but he was still able to continue with the game, which is very good to see.

Overall, these are the kinds of hits that you absolutely hate to see, although it is not surprising coming from a guy like Cousins who has always sought to be a thorn in everyone's side.

At the time of writing this, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators are all tied up at 1-1 in the first intermission.

Bobby McMann was the goalscorer for the Maple Leafs and he seems to be settling into his role on the top line.

Only time will tell whether or not the Leafs can put a solid 40 minutes together and come through with the win.
