Just one day before the Toronto Maple Leafs' New Year's Eve game against the New York Islanders, the team has announced a new ceremony that will be a yearly tradition.

The Maple Leafs are a team with numerous alumni and legends, which means every year, the team, unfortunately, mourns the passing of many great individuals.

Toronto Maple Leafs create new ceremony as a yearly tradition

Unfortunately, these deaths can sometimes pass people by to the point where longtime and even new fans aren't even aware of them.

Well, the Toronto Maple Leafs are looking to change that once and for all by instituting a brand-new yearly tradition in the form of a ceremony that pays homage to those within the organization who passed during a given calendar year.

According to reporter Lance Hornby, this is a tradition that will take place during the closest home game to December 31st, which means tomorrow's game against New York will boast the inaugural ceremony.

Starting with tomorrow's game, the Maple Leafs will introduce a new tradition: an «In Memoriam» tribute to honor players who passed away during the year. The ceremony, held at all home games closest to Dec. 31, will feature a moment of silence, a video tribute, and two family members of each honoree as special guests in a private suite.

Nine players will be honored this year, and there is no doubt that it will be an emotional ceremony.

This year's honorees include Ron Ellis, Peter Conacher, Sergei Berezin, Ed Chadwick, Gerry James, Don Marshall, Larry McIntyre, Tim Ecclestone, and Paul Masnick.

This is also a great way of introducing young fans to the history of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Over the decades, players become more obscure and lost to the history books. But now, these incredible players will live on forever.

All the Leafs need to do is cap the night off with a win to make all of this truly special.
