Stanley Cup Contender to Compete with Toronto Maple Leafs for Brayden Schenn
St. Louis Blues captain Brayden Schenn is a target for the Toronto Maple Leafs at the trade deadline but there is another team looking to swoop in and steal him.
Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving would love to add a center to the roster at the trade deadline and Brayden Schenn is a name that has been constantly mentioned in reports from the league's best insiders.
Although the St. Louis Blues captain would cost a lot of assets, the center would also be able to inject significant offense into the lineup just in time for the playoffs.
Schenn is a Stanley Cup winner and he is also a favorite of Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube.
Will the Toronto Maple Leafs trade for Brayden Schenn?
However, the Leafs are going to have to be careful here as they are not the only team looking to acquire the center.
According to Elliotte Friedman on "32 Thoughts," the Las Vegas Golden Knights are interested in taking a swing at Schenn and they may even go after Mikko Rantanen.
They have more assets than the Maple Leafs, which could be a bit of a problem in the negotiation process.
I think if Rantanen's there, they take a shot. Can they do it? I don't know. But they'll take their shot. Brayden Schenn, I think they're in and around it. They'll take their shot. I don't know if it's gonna end up going their way - there're definitely teams that can outbid them with what they've got. I think they will add scoring somewhere, but I just look at them and I say, 'I always assume the big swing first.'
The Maple Leafs are first in the Atlantic Division and are on a five-game winning streak. All of this to say, this is a team that could potentially win the Stanley Cup.
However, it is going to take extra pieces and it is going to take guys who have done it before. Schenn fits this criteria and it stands to reason that he would be a great addition.
It would probably take Fraser Minten or Easton Cowan and a first-round pick to get this deal done, and Brad Treliving has to decide whether or not he is willing to do that.
Needless to say, these next few days are going to be fascinating for the franchise.
