Toronto Maple Leafs Linked to $15 Million Stanley Cup Winner at the Trade Deadline
The Toronto Maple Leafs want to make a splash at the trade deadline and it seems like a New York Rangers forward is currently on GM Brad Treliving's radar.
Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has a long list of players that he would love to acquire at the trade deadline.
After all, the team is in the hunt for a Stanley Cup and some extra firepower for the final months of the season would certainly go a very long way for this team.
Who are the Toronto Maple Leafs targeting at the trade deadline?
For the most part, Treliving has been looking for a third-line center who can help out with the team's depth scoring issues.
However, according to Frank Seravalli of The Daily Faceoff, there is a New York Rangers forward who could prove to be a target for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
That target is none other than Reilly Smith, a Stanley Cup winner with the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
Despite being a right-winger, Servalli believes he could be a tremendous help to the Leafs, who need some scoring in the playoffs.
"New York held out Smith for trade-related protection over the weekend, their trade of Ryan Lindgren to Colorado indicating that they're not willing to pass up assets for their UFAs in this off-the-rails season. Smith is a proven playoff performer - a 2023 Stanley Cup winner and critical cog in two trips to the Final with Vegas. The Penguins have already retained on Smith, but the Rangers can chop him in half one more time. It would make a lot of sense for the Maple Leafs to bring him home to Toronto and add a little Cup pedigree to their room and third line. But they have to get a center first." Smith is in the final year of a three-year, $15 million deal which means he would only be a rental for the Leafs right now.
Moreover, it seems unlikely that the Leafs would even go for a deal like this right now seeing as though their number one need is for a center and perhaps even a depth defenseman.
That said, Reilly Smith does have experience Toronto needs, and perhaps that forced Brad Treliving into making an intriguing deal.
