After all, Cowan plays for the Knights while fellow Leafs prospect Ben Danford plays for the Oshawa Generals.

Some believe Shanahan was at the game so that he could assess whether or not Cowan or Danford should be traded with the deadline coming up in five days.
Of course, the Maple Leafs have made their interest in Brayden Schenn known, and it seems like the London Knights superstar could be a victim of circumstance in that regard.
However, this three-goal performance may have just bought him another season with the organization. He wants to prove that he is too good to be traded and his latest performance may have actually worked.
Having said that, the Maple Leafs' plans right now are rooted in the short term as they are desperate trying to go out and win a Stanley Cup.
