While the Leafs have decided that they would prefer Dennis Hildeby as their backup right now, there is no denying the fact that Matt Murray has been a stud with the Toronto Marlies.
In fact, the two-time Stanley Cup champion's run has been so impressive that the Leafs have no choice but to reconsider their stance on him.
We say this because last night, Murray secured his second shutout in 12 games this season.
He turned aside 23 shots and it was one of those performances that really make you think that Murray should get another shot at the highest level of the sport.
After all, his AHL stats include a goals-against average of 1.98 and a save percentage of .925. These are great numbers and Murray has earned a second look.
Dennis Hildeby, on the other hand, has struggled at times in the NHL and it is clear that some extra time in the AHL would do him some good.
Murray's two games with the Maple Leafs this season were decent but his one loss was seen as unforgivable and that is why he was demoted.
This is now giving the Maple Leafs an ultimatum on whether or not they should take action.
Unfortunately for Murray, Anthony Stolarz is coming back soon, which means Joseph Woll and Stolarz will be the Leafs' netminders.
It also means Hildeby will have to come back to the AHL, therefore affecting Murray's playing time.
Only time will tell if the Leafs decide to move on from Murray entirely so that he can get a better opportunity elsewhere.
