With the NHL salary cap on the rise soon, it is very likely that Marner will be able to get a massive contract.
Some believe that his next deal is going to cost the Maple Leafs about $13 to $14 million per year, which is a whole lot.
However, there is no guarantee whether or not this is actually going to be the case.
Having said all of that, the Leafs would love to get a deal done soon as they have other players to sign, and other moves to make.
The longer the Marner negotiation drags on, the worse it will be for the entire franchise as a whole.
Recently, Darren Dreger of TSN came through with a very interesting report regarding Marner.
Essentially, he believes that Marner and the Maple Leafs are looking to get the deal done in-season. Neither party wants this to be a distraction in the playoffs.
If the playoffs were to begin today, the Maple Leafs would be the first seed in the Atlantic Division.
They have won six of their last seven games and they are on their way to making it seven out of eight as they play the Utah Hockey Club.
Marner has been fantastic this year and while his playoff performances have been less-than-stellar over the years, this year could be different.
With a fully completed extension, perhaps that will give him the mental clarity he so craves.
