The NHL trade deadline is coming up fast which means a lot of teams are looking to make some big changes in a short period of time.
This is especially true for contenders like the Minnesota Wild, who had to make a difficult decision involving defenseman Travis Dermott today.
Dermott, who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs between 2017 and 2022, was placed on waivers today amidst a season in which he has zero points in 19 games.
The defenseman was not getting a ton of ice time with the Minnesota Wild, which makes sense considering this is a very deep team that is going to be a potential Darkhorse in the postseason.
As for what happens next for Dermott, we will just have to wait and see if a team claims him. If no one takes him, then he may just have to go down to the AHL for a bit.
The defenseman certainly has good NHL experience as he has 348 games under his belt and has also proven to be a solid shutdown D-man with a career net rating of +3.
Since playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Dermott has bounced around the league. In addition to the Leafs and Wild, he has played for the Vancouver Canucks, Arizona Coyotes, and the Edmonton Oilers.
The Maple Leafs are a team in need of some defensive depth, however, Dermott doesn't really improve what the team already has. Instead, he is more of the same.
For the Leafs, their best chance at nabbing another defenseman would be through the trade market as opposed to the waiver wire. It is unfortunate, but it is the truth.
As for Dermott, we hope he is able to land on his feet and earn some consistency going forward.
