Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving May Be Forced Into Making An Uncomfortable Trade, Insider Claims
The Toronto Maple Leafs face growing pressure to address their roster's issues ahead of the NHL trade deadline, particularly the lack of offensive production from their defensemen.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman highlights this challenge on The Fan Hockey Show, noting that the Leafs' blueline produced zero goals in December, despite nearly 100 shots on net.
Maple Leafs GM Craig Berube has to do something eventually
Aside from Morgan Rielly, this lack of contribution has started speculation that Brad Treliving may prioritize acquiring an offensive defenseman instead of a center.
Elliotte Friedman highlighted Brad Treliving's dilemma.
"I think they might. To me it just comes down to what are the assets it's going to cost here," said Friedman. "I think they probably look at it a bit, but I don't know what kind of acquisition cost -- to me, they don't have a lot they can afford to deal yet. They're starting to grow their prospect base... The whole thing is, they probably have - with whatever assets they're willing to do, they probably have one shot at this. The last thing I checked, they considered their number one thing they had to do was fill their center spot... What do they consider the most and what are you willing to spend to do it and then after that what room do you have or what assets do you have to solve your other problem?"
If scoring from the blueline remains an issue, Treliving might have to split resources and target two lower-cost players instead of one big name on the trade market, but while this approach would provide improvements at both positions, it may lack the impact needed to address the Leafs' deficiencies.
With two months until the trade deadline, the Leafs are hopeful that internal adjustments and a healthier lineup can resolve some of their struggles since they had multiples injury during the beginning of the season.
Still, if the defense continues to underperform offensively, Treliving could be forced to change his strategy by balancing short-term needs with long-term sustainability.
The decision to focus on either center depth or the blueline will ultimately determine if the team's is ready for the playoff or not and if they will succeed in a very competitive Atlantic division.
