Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving had previously made it clear that Fraser Minten and Easton Cowan were off limits. Is that still true?

Easton Cowan and Fraser Minten are two Maple Leafs forward prospects who have been eliciting a ton of attention at the NHL trade deadline and for very good reason.

Both of these players are extremely talented and there are plenty of teams who would love to have them in their system. These guys have potential, and if a team is rebuilding, they would prove to be huge assets for that.

Will the Toronto Maple Leafs part ways with Easton Cowan and Fraser Minten

However, it has been reported that Brad Treliving and the Toronto Maple Leafs would prefer not to trade their prospects.

Instead, they would much rather engage in trades that come at a lower cost to the franchise's future.

Unfortunately, that is going to be impossible if the Maple Leafs are serious about improving their roster for the playoffs.

According to Elliotte Friedman, Treliving is starting to recognize this harsh reality, and as a result, the Leafs are starting to change their minds on the inevitable.

"I think the guy they have done the most research on is Schenn and the most internal thought on is Schenn. I've heard that a lot. I think they've really weighed it internally. It's a big price, right?

If they're going to do it, it's probably going to cost them two of those things that we talked about (Fraser Minten, Easton Cowan, Ben Danford, 2026 first-round pick)...There's no question in my mind the player they've have thought about the most and analyzed the most is Brayden Schenn."

If the Leafs do officially change their minds, it will all be in service of acquiring St. Louis Blues captain Brayden Schenn, who is their top trade target right now.

Overall, Schenn is a player with 12 goals and 38 points this season, which makes him someone who can help the team win right now.

Unfortunately, Fraser Minten and Easton Cowan cannot do that. Treliving is being tasked with a very difficult calculated risk, and we do not envy his position.

If anything, these next 24 hours are going to be incredibly interesting.
