For those who may not remember, Murray had quite a few struggles last season and ended up finding himself in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies as Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz have invaded the Maple Leafs net.
However, Anthony Stolarz has since gotten injured and now, the Maple Leafs backup is Dennis Hildeby.
Matt Murray had been dealing with an injury, so it makes sense that the Leafs had looked elsewhere for their replacement.
Last night, the Maple Leafs defeated the Dallas Stars by a score of 5-3 on the same evening that Murray pitched a shutout with the Marlies.
Following the game, head coach Craig Berube was asked about the goaltender, and it was here where he said that Murray could very well get a call moving forward.
While Hildeby has been solid in the Toronto Maple Leafs goal, he certainly lacks experience.
With Stolarz looking to miss over a month of action, it may not be sustainable to keep the Hildebeast in the net, which means this would be a great time to call Matt Murray.
His experience is something that the Maple Leafs need and while it is unlikely he takes over the starting spot, this could be a great opportunity for him to increase his stock.
No matter what, it is very clear that the Leafs are deep at the goaltending position, which is something every team needs in order to be successful.
With the Leafs entering a back-to-back this weekend, perhaps we will eventually see Murray in the lineup.
