Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving recently explained the decision to send rookie forward Fraser Minten to the AHL's Toronto Marlies.

As reported by Hockey Patrol, despite Fraser Minten burning the first year of his entry-level contract by playing over nine NHL games, Brad Treliving said that this move is about consistent development.

Treliving emphasized that Minten needs regular playing time, which wasn't guaranteed in the NHL.

«I think he played tremendous for us,» Treliving said.

«But if you're not going to be in the lineup, and you're a young player, you have to keep playing. We're not going to sit him in the stands.»

Fraser Minten who was a healthy scratch in the Leafs' 5-3 win over Buffalo, heads back to the Marlies where he has four points in five games this season.

In 11 NHL games this year, Minten posted two goals and two assists while providing energy in the bottom six for the Leafs.

Some fans argued that Minten offers more offensive upside than veteran David Kampf, who is also a defensive-minded center.

However, David Kampf's return from a lower-body injury brings experience and reliable defense that head coach Craig Berube values, especially in tight matchups.

Minten was a second-round pick in 2022 and he has played 15 career NHL games.

Though he didn't score in four games last season, his potential is clear and returning to the AHL allows Fraser Minten to log significant minutes and refine his skills, preparing him for a full-time NHL role.

With the Leafs aiming for success, Minten's temporary demotion offers the best path for his development and the team's long-term benefit.
