NHL Insider Claims One Team Is Gearing Up to Offer Mitch Marner a Deal He Can't Refuse
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner is looking for a massive contract and there are now reports that one team could be looking to play spoiler during Free Agency.
Mitch Marner is currently in the midst of a career year with the Toronto Maple Leafs as he has 70 points in 52 games this season.
He is an unrestricted free agent this summer and is looking for a massive contract that could very well pay him more than Auston Matthews.
Mitch Marner and the Toronto Maple Leafs continue to negotiate
According to reports, the Maple Leafs are unwilling to pay Marner more than Matthews, although a salary cap of $95.5 million could very well change that mentality.
Regardless, Marner is going to cost the Leafs a whole lot of money and the negotiations could prove to be difficult.
With that being said, a new report from The Fourth Period is suggesting that one team out West wants to swoop in and sweep Marner off of his feet.
That team just so happens to be the Utah Hockey Club who want to give their new fans something to be excited about.
In fact, the Utahns are thinking of not just Marner, but Mikko Rantanen as well, who was just traded from the Colorado Avalanche to the Carolina Hurricanes.
"Word on the street suggests Utah wants to add and plans on spending big going into the 2025-26 campaign. Armstrong may try to get some groundwork done over the next four-to-five weeks before the March 7 trade deadline and that could translate into bigger moves made over the summer, perhaps around the NHL Draft... The belief is that Utah is willing to spend to lure top-tier free agents and that could result in them being players in the Mikko Rantanen and/or Mitch Marner sweepstakes - with the hopes of signing one of them - should they hit the open market on July 1."
Whether or not Mitch Marner would be interested in such a deal, still remains to be seen.
Based on everything we know so far, the Leafs forward is still very much interested in coming back and quite frankly, it would be his preference.
Hopefully, GM Brad Treliving is able to make it happen.
