NHL Insider Claims Stanley Cup Contender Called the Maple Leafs About Mitch Marner
NHL Insider Frank Seravalli broke the Carolina Hurricanes Mikko Rantanen trade and as it turns out, the deal could have been Mitch Marner instead.
Mitch Marner is the leading scorer on the Toronto Maple Leafs this season and he has been playing himself into a massive contract extension.
However, his contract hasn't been signed yet and there are plenty of fears that he will simply walk in the summer if the team doesn't give him what he wants.

Of course, the Mikko Rantanen trade is also stoking some fears as his situation was very similar to Marner's.
Adding fuel to the fire is NHL Insider Frank Seravalli, who recently revealed that the Hurricanes called the Maple Leafs about the superstar.
Having said that, talks did not go far as Marner has a no-movement clause and the Leafs were not interested in parting ways with someone so integral to the team.
"I believe that the Carolina Hurricanes at least inquired about Mitch Marner as they were going through this process with Mikko Rantanen. I don't know how far they got, I don't know if it's a possibility that maybe they were not a team that Marner would go to. Look, they were in on Pettersson, Miller, Rantanen, I'd be very surprised if they did not at least inquire, or even more strongly than that, with the Toronto Maple Leafs about Mitch Marner."
One has to wonder what the Hurricanes would have been willing to give up for Mitch Marner.
Toronto Maple Leafs fans certainly wouldn't have been happy with Martin Necas and Jack Drury.
Brad Treliving would need security detail in Toronto if he made a deal like that. Regardless, you can't help but admire what the Hurricanes are trying to do here.
Hopefully, the Maple Leafs can kill off the trade rumors and give Mitch Marner the contract he so deserves.
