Mitch Marner and the Toronto Maple Leafs are currently in the midst of contract negotiations that could very well have massive implications on the future of the franchise.
The forward is in the midst of a career year and as a result, there are reports that he could demand upwards of $14 million per year.
Overall, this is a lot of money and the word on the street is that the Leafs do not want to pay Marner more than they are paying Auston Matthews.
Subsequently, this has led to fears that the Leafs will end up losing the forward in free agency for nothing.
According to NHL insider Bob McKenzie, the it is very likely that Marner ends up going to free agency, however, he still thinks he will remain a Leaf.
While the Leafs and Marner have negotiated throughout the season, it has been reported that the forward has declined some of the contract offers.
One would imagine that the Leafs are trying to sign him to an eight-year deal and for all intents and purposes, that is exactly what Marner wants.
However, if the money isn't right, then this is something that could extend all the way into the summer.
Another major part of the equation is Marner's playoff performance. If he can figure it out this Spring, then perhaps the Leafs will be more willing to give him that $14 million.
