Team USA captain Auston Matthews was absent from Monday's game against Sweden, and speculation about his health has started.

Initially thought to be an illness, new reports have confirmed that Matthews is dealing with another lower-body injury and it's raising concerns for both Team USA and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

What is real injury of Auston Matthews and could it affect his season with the Toronto Maple Leafs?

According to Chris Johnston, this injury isn't expected to be serious, but it is the third time this season that Matthews has dealt with an ailment.

Earlier in the year, an upper-body injury sidelined him for nine games and it then was followed by another six-game absence shortly after his return.

Now, this lower-body issue adds to an already frustrating season and while Auston Matthews has still managed 20 goals and 25 assists in 40 games, his numbers could be even higher had he not missed several games.

With Toronto positioned as a legitimate Stanley Cup contender, keeping their captain healthy is crucial for their success.

Though he is expected to play in Thursday's championship game against Canada, his health remains a concern an if he's not at 100%, Team Canada could take advantage of a weakened American squad.

For the Maple Leafs, the priority is long-term health and as they've already battled significant injuries this season, another setback for Matthews could be a major hit for the Leafs

For now, all eyes are on Thursday's final, but Leafs fans will be watching closely, hoping their star can stay on the ice when it matters most.
