The Toronto Maple Leafs organization opted to make a Toronto Marlies trade today as a defenseman was sent to the Rockford IceDogs of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Defenseman Matteo Pietroniro has been a soldier within the Toronto Maple Leafs organization over the last few years although he has since been sent packing to Rockford of the AHL.

Matteo Pietroniro goes from the Toronto Marlies to the Rockford IceDogs

The move was announced earlier today as the IceDogs revealed that they had traded for Pietroniro.

Going back to the Toronto Marlies will be future considerations, so it is going to take a while before we really know what the return was worth.

During his time in the AHL, there were also times in which the defenseman was sent to down to the ECHL to play for the Newfoundland Growlers.

Unfortunately, Pietroniro was not getting very much ice time with the Marlies this season as he only entered five games and was unable to get points in any of them.

The defenseman has 12-career points in the AHL and he has 30 in the ECHL. Clearly, he is more of a stay-at-home defenseman.

With the Chicago Blackhawks adding a solid depth guy to their AHL system, it will be interesting to see if Pietroniro gets more opportunities to shine.

Just a few days ago, the Toronto Maple Leafs acquired Dakota Mermis, which made the Marlies roster a bit overcrowded.

With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that the team opted to make this trade when they did.

We wish Pietroniro the best of luck moving forward and we hope he is able to find success in the AHL.

Do you believe this was a good trade for the Toronto Marlies and the Toronto Maple Leafs as a whole?
