Toronto Maple Leafs forward Connor Dewar is injured right now and it has opened up an opportunity for a scrappy young prospect who has been sensational.

Like John Tavares and Matthew Knies, Connor Dewar has been dealing with an injury that will keep him out of tonight's game against the Ottawa Senators.

His injury has since led to an unfortunate update, albeit one that might be bittersweet for some people.

Connor Dewar is out and Nikita Grebenkin is in

According to the Leafs, Connor Dewar has been placed on the injured reserve which means he will be out for at least a week.

However, the team has decided to call up Nikita Grebenkin from the Toronto Marlies.

Maple Leafs F Connor Dewar has been placed on IR (retroactive to January 20).

F Nikita Grebenkin has been recalled from the Toronto Marlies (AHL).

Grebenkin is a young forward who was extremely gritty during his first run with the Leafs earlier in the season.

Although he did not provide a ton of offense, he was still someone that Leafs fans gravitated towards and he has a real opportunity here to showcase what he can.

That said, he will probably be a healthy scratch for a few games unless someone else on the team also goes down with an injury.

Either way, the team now has Grebenkin as an option if they want to go with something a little bit different.

Tonight, the Leafs take on the Ottawa Senators in an Atlantic Division matchup that could very well be a playoff preview.
