Wednesday was an interesting day for the Toronto Maple Leafs as they ended up placing both Alex Nylander and Dakota Mermis on waivers.
Overall, it was very clear why Nylander was put on waivers considering he just hadn't been very good for the team so far this season.
Meanwhile, Dakota Mermis was someone who got injured during training camp and never played a single game for the Maple Leafs.
In fact, Mermis got to play three games for the Toronto Marlies, but that was about it. Needless to say, it was a given he would be placed on waivers at some point.
Well, today, it was revealed that Mermis did not clear waivers. Instead, he was picked up by the Utah Hockey Club.
Mermis only has 74 games of NHL experience and has spent most of his time between the Minnesota Wild and the Iowa Wild.
However, he is someone who has potential and he a depth play for the Utah Hockey Club, who certainly could use that.
Not to mention, Utah could always use Dakota Mermis as a trade piece of sorts later on down the line, if they so choose.
Either way, the Maple Leafs lost out big time here, as Mermis could have eventually found his way into the lineup.
Now, the Leafs will just have to throw their hands up and leave things where they may.
