At the end of regulation, Conor Garland interfered with Connor McDavid as the Oilers desperately tried to tie up the game with their net empty.
Garland's actions should have resulted in a penalty. Instead, McDavid took matters into his own hands by cross-checking the Canucks star right upside the head.
Subsequently, the Edmonton Oilers captain was given a match penalty, although that doesn't mean much as this happened with two seconds to go in the game.
Overall, it was a shocking display from McDavid, although, given the referees' inaction, it is easily justifiable.
Unfortunately for the Oilers, it appears as though McDavid could be on the cusp of being suspended.
We say this because the NHL Department of Player Safety announced that the forward would have a hearing with them sometime this week.
The Oilers have relied on McDavid's production this season as he has 65 points in 43 games. This includes 20 goals as well as 45 assists.
If McDavid is suspended by the Department of Player Safety, it will most likely be for just one game.
After all, the NHL needs to show the fans that they don't play favorites when it comes to their superstars.
Hopefully, next time, the referees actually do their job and put a stop to these kinds of altercations, so the players don't feel the need to police themselves.
