Toronto Maple Leafs prospect goaltender Artur Akhtyamov was in nets last night against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton although he got injured and Matt Murray saved the day.

Wednesday night was not a good one for the Toronto Marlies as they lost 6-3 to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, all while suffering an injury to their rookie goaltender, Artur Akhtyamov.

Artur Akhtyamov goes down and Matt Murray comes back up

Akhtyamov has been a stud in his first AHL season and there are some people within the Toronto Maple Leafs organization who believe he should be the next goaltender to get a shot in the NHL.

Having said that, his opportunity may not come soon as he was injured last night in what turned out to be a blowout.

According to Marlies PR on Twitter, Matt Murray had to come out and replace him, and it did not go well.

Akhtyamov was actually helped off the ice, and we can only imagine what the sense was on the Marlies bench at the time.

For now, we do not know the extent of the goaltender's injury and whether or not he will have to miss a significant amount of time.

In 15 starts this season, Akhtyamov has amassed a record of 9-3-1 while putting up a goals-against average of 2.81 and a save percentage of .897.

While these numbers may not seem all that impressive, it is important to keep in mind that the AHL typically has more offense and can be a bit more hostile towards rookie goaltenders.

Akhtyamov is a guy that wins you hockey games and for the Marlies, that is all that matters right now.

We wish him well and hopefully, this was just precautionary and we will see him back on the ice over the weekend.
