Auston Matthews has been dealing with an upper-body injury as of late and the Toronto Maple Leafs had to put him on injured reserve because of it.

Despite news that he was somehow progressing, Matthews got hit with the bad news yesterday. This news effectively confirmed that he would not play last night's match against the Detroit Red Wings. Moreover, he isn't playing the Montreal Canadiens tonight.

However, as it turns out, some good news in regard to Matthews has finally been announced.

According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the Leafs had Matthews partake in optional skate this morning. While Matthews is only eligible to come back next week, this is a nice sigh of things to come.

"Auston Matthews skating for the first time since his injury at TOR optional.

Out tonight, eligible to return next week"

The Leafs won last night's tilt against the Detroit Red Wings by a score of 3-1.

It was the second game in a row in which the Leafs were able to win without Matthews in the lineup. This has led to some uncomfortable questions.

However, everyone understands that Matthews is fundamental to this team. For now, the players are just stepping up as they understand they need to get some wins.

At a record of 8-5-2, this Leafs team is starting to cook and they are hoping to remain a powerhouse in the Atlantic division.
