Patrick Kane compares Auston Matthews to a beloved NHL legend
At the time of writing this, the Toronto Maple Leafs are taking on the Detroit Red Wings in an Original Six matchup.
There was a special Hall of Fame ceremony before the game, and Pavel Datsyuk was honored. He was a phenomenal player for the Red Wings and had a ton of skill that fans loved to watch.
Prior to the game, The Hockey News interviewed players about Datsyuk and his legacy. He was a truly unique player and it can be hard to compare other players to him. However, Patrick Kane was asked to do just that.
Shockingly, Kane compared Datsyuk to none other than Auston Matthews.
Auston Matthews is like Pavel Datsyuk?
Maybe Auston's more of a shooter, but as far as playing both ends of the ice and being able to strip guys of the puck and turn it into offense, I think that's where they're pretty similar."
This is one of those comments that is easy to disagree with. Sure, Matthews is skilled but he doesn't have the same skillset as Datsyuk.
Matthews is a great goal scorer but he isn't always super flashy about it. Datsyuk was known for his dekes and raw talent. Meanwhile, Matthews is more measured.
Either way, it must be cool to get these kind of co-signs from your peers. Matthews is a great player and some day, he too will be in the Hall of Fame.
