The Toronto Maple Leafs were eager to trade for St. Louis Blues captain Brayden Schenn but they ultimately had to settle for Scott Laughton of the Flyers.

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving was looking to acquire a third-line center at the NHL trade deadline and Brayden Schenn was at the top of that list.

Although he was somone who would cost a considerable amount of assets, the Leafs were willing to make it happen knowing that Craig Berube loves him and he has Stanley Cup experience.

Toronto Maple Leafs lose out on Brayden Schenn

In the end, the Maple Leafs were unable to trade for Schenn. Instead, they traded for Scott Laughton who was seen as the next best option, all things considered.

It took Nikita Grebenkin and a first-round pick in 2027 to get him, which for some is a bit of an overpay. However, the Leafs got what they wanted.

As it turns out, they had no choice but to go after Laughton because Brayden Schenn ultimately had no interest in waiving his no-trade clause for Toronto.

McKenzie on TSN says Leafs wanted Brayden Schenn but Schenn did not want to waive his NTC so they pivoted to Scott Laughton.

There weren't many other suitors for Schenn at the deadline, so the captain decided to stay put. It makes sense, the team could make a playoff push, and he loves the city.

Now, the Maple Leafs will look to make another deal before the 3 PM deadline. Fans are expecting a right-handed defenseman although there is no guarantee that they will be able to get something like that done.

Whatever the case may be, Brad Treliving actually did something which is what fans were kind of worried about. Prior to the Laughton trade, Leafs fans were ready to protest in the streets.

Now, all that matters is winning and whether or not this team wins some series in the Stanley Cup playoffs. If they can do that, then Schenn will largely be forgotten.
