Overall, Matthews is the team's captain and he is one of the best goal-scorers in the entire NHL.
However, Matthews has, in fact, struggled to start the year. He has had some bad games, and the fans have taken notice of this fact.
Not to mention, he is currently injured and will likely be out for the rest of the week before ramping up his return to the ice. Either way, fans know what he is capable of.
Tanev is positive that Matthews is going to be a record-breaker some day. On Wednesday, the Leafs play the Washington Capitals.
Of course, the Capitals have Alexander Ovechkin who is currently chasing Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in the history of the National Hockey League.
Recently, Tanev claimed that Matthews has the ability to surpass Ovechkin, but on one condition.
Through 575-career games, Matthews had a total of 373 goals which makes him the sixth-fastest to that mark. This is outpacing Ovechkin.
That said, Matthews has had a lot of injuries and what he is going through right now is further proof of this.
With that in mind, it is easy to see how someone might not be convinced that Matthews will have the longevity to reach that kind of mark.
Hopefully, Matthews is able to prove us all wrong. Moreover, we hope he does just that in a Leafs jersey.
