Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander is currently stuck in a slump and his head coach Craig Berube has a pretty nuanced take on what is happening right now.

William Nylander came into tonight's game against the Carolina Hurricanes having not scored a goal in eight games.

Prior to the New Year, he had 23 goals on the year and was second place in the Rocket Richard race, right behind Leon Draisaitl.

Shockingly, despite the slump, Nylander has remained tied for second place as numerous high-scoring players have hit slumps.

While speaking to the media, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube explained exactly why Nylander is going through all of this right now.

"I think sometimes skilled players and scorers lose their confidence a little bit. And that's what I see right now with Willy: a little bit of a lack of confidence. And for me, it's talking to him about just working his way out of the situation."

However, Berube did show some tough love, noting that the star forward needs to continue working hard to get out of this rough patch.

"You can't just relate to, 'Well, I need a break.' Work your way out, get your breaks, work for your breaks. That's the biggest thing for me is just get him back to work a little bit more. And being more tenacious on pucks and puck battles and things like that. When he was scoring a lot his puck battles were extremely high, and he was playing with more pace. He's just kind of not playing with the same pace right now."

Ironically enough, William Nylander scored tonight to give the Maple Leafs an early 2-0 lead in the first period against the Hurricanes.

Unfortunately, the Hurricanes have since stormed back and the score is now tied at 2-2.
