Auston Matthews has been officially ruled out of the Maple Leafs game against the New York Islanders on Saturday night, and it appears as though he might have to miss some additional time.
Matthews has been dealing with a lingering upper-body injury all season long and it forced him to miss three weeks of the NHL season.
On Friday night against the Buffalo Sabres, Matthews got shoved in the ribs by Dennis Gilbert, and he was clearly in a lot of pain.
When the news came down that the captain would be out tonight, many pointed to this incident as the direct cause.
According to Luke Fox of Sportsnet, Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube has confirmed this to be the case.
While speaking to reporters, the Maple Leafs coach noted that Matthews began to feel shakey after getting a stick directly to his ribs.
With Matthews injured again, one has to wonder whether or not it is worth it for him to play at the 4 Nations Face-Off which is going to take place in February.
This would be two months away from the playoffs, and the Leafs absolutely need their captain to be healthy, moving forward.
Luckily, the Maple Leafs have been fairly good without Matthews in the lineup, which certainly helps them in the immediate future.
However, if the captain's injury is one that just won't go away, it would probably just be better to sit him until he is 100 percent ready to return.
