Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has been dealing with a lingering injury as of late, and today, the team made an announcement that will upset fans.

Tonight, the Maple Leafs are playing the New York Islanders, and since last night, there has been speculation that Auston Matthews would not play as he got banged up on Friday against the Buffalo Sabres.

Toronto Maple Leafs officially sit Auston Matthews

Matthews' continuous injury problems have left a lot of Maple Leafs fans worried, and those fears were confirmed last night.

On multiple occasions, the captain was put through the ringer and he even took a pretty big shot to the ribs.

According to Chris Johnston, Auston Matthews is officially out tonight against the Islanders.

Simply put, they want to ensure that he is healthy, and they may even sit him out on Monday.

"Hearing that Auston Matthews won't be available to the #leafs tonight after reaggravating the injury that kept him out of games in November. He's considered questionable for Monday's game."

If you are the Toronto Maple Leafs, this news has to sting quite a bit.

At the end of the day, it was promised that Matthews was feeling fine and that he was finally back to a healthy state.

However, that appears to not be the case, and one must wonder if the team is going to have to continue to sit him out, going forward.

The Leafs should now consider sitting Matthews for the 4 Nations Face-Off happening in February.

If they let him play, he could get injured even worse, and that would absolutely take the Leafs out of it come playoff time.
