Last night, Matt Murray made his triumphant return to the NHL as he captured a huge win for the Toronto Maple Leafs as they took on the struggling Buffalo Sabres.
Tonight, the Leafs are taking on the New York Islanders, and it has become pretty clear that Joseph Woll will be getting the start.
However, the team announced what, on the surface, sounds like a pretty surprising move, as Murray was sent right back down to the Toronto Marlies.
Subsequently, Dennis Hildeby will be coming right back up to the Toronto Maple Leafs and will likely be the backup tonight.
While this seems like a rejection of Murray's play, that is actually not the case whatsoever.
According to Luke Fox of Sportsnet, this is simply a paper move by Brad Treliving to delay the need to put the goaltender on waivers.
Needless to say, fans can expect Murray to come back up to the Leafs eventually, although the timeline on that is unclear, at least for now.
Hopefully, we get to see Murray get some more opportunities for the Leafs, moving forward.
Even if the days of him being a starting NHL goaltender are long gone, he can still be a serviceable backup, or even an elite third-stringer.
The Maple Leafs have a great goaltending situation right now, and fans should be very happy that they have three viable choices right now.
