Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies has proven to be a stud so far this season and there is no doubt that he is earning himself a contract extension.

Overall, Knies has started the year strong as he has six goals in the first 11 games. Moreover, five of those goals have come in the last six games. It just goes to show that Knies is finding his stride.

Having said that, he will want a new contract very soon, and he has absolutely earned it. Now, insiders like Darren Dreger and Nick Alberga are prophecizing about when that contract will come.

As Dreger and Alberga have mentioned, it is likely only going to come once the summer rolls around. Moreover, when it comes to term, the Leafs will likely only be inclined to give a bridge deal. This would be either three or four years.

When it comes to the money aspect of things, Sportsnet insider Nick Kypreos believes we could see a massive dollar amount here. He compared Knies to Montreal Canadiens star Juraj Slafkovsky. He even said that Knies could get upwards of $7 million per year.

In totality, that feels like a bit of an absurd figure. Perhaps something around $5 or $6 million makes a lot more sense. But with the salary cap going up, players are getting paid a whole lot more these days. Regardless, some fans are going to find this price to be just a tad steep.

Do you believe that Knies deserves a big extension? Let us know in the poll down below.
